Smart Routes To School is committed to protecting your privacy and safety online. We encourage parents to check and monitor your use of all online activities and we urge you to ask your parent’s or guardian’s permission before giving personal information to any web site. In addition, we protect your privacy by not posting messages or submissions that contain personal information, such as a full name or an e-mail address. We have created this policy to explain why we ask you for information when you enroll in Smart Routes and how you or your parent can change or delete that information. The policy also explains the types of information we gather and it is used.

We Protect Kids Privacy

In keeping with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)--the law that protects your online privacy--and the guidelines of the Children's Advertising Review Unit of the Council of Better Business Bureaus, Smart Routes limits the collection of personal information from students. For example, Smart Routes does not ask for your phone number; will not intentionally post, sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties.

Why We Collect Information

Smart Routes To School participation is limited to certain approved schools. Students, with the assistance of their parent or guardian, must enroll to participate in online activities. Students can participate in Smart Routes activities at their school without enrolling online. To enroll in Smart Routes and to assist us in verifying that only authorized participants are enrolling, we ask you to provide some basic information: Your first name, last name, school and limited transportation information. By enrolling, we are able to collectively track travel information for your school. You can choose to provide additional information such as your daily trip log and personal journal entries. This additional information can be viewed only by you and your parents/guardians.

Parents: You should know that COPPA prohibits children's sites from requiring kids to provide any information other than what is reasonably necessary for participation in activities.

How We Collect and Use Information

1. Student Enrollment
We ask for the following information when you enroll in Smart Routes online:

  • Your first name and last name and password that you make up
  • A parent's e-mail address
  • The school you currently attend
  • Your normal mode of transportation to and from school
  • How far your trip to school is (If you are unsure of this distance you have the option of typing in your address on a map for the purpose of measuring the distance. The address is not saved.)

We ask for a parent's or guardian's e-mail address in keeping with standard safety guidelines and COPPA and to protect the integrity of our site. This allows us to let your parents know that you've enrolled in Smart Routes, and to tell them about our privacy policy, activities they can participate in, and your activities at our site. We do not ask for a student’s email address, Any communication from the Smart Routes program will be sent to the parent/guardian.

We use non-personal information--your school, your distance from school, your transportation mode--to maintain a useful web site and Smart Routes program. We may also use collective information by school (total number of participants, total number of trips logged by mode, etc.) with our partners, sponsors and in marketing, publicity and evaluation.
